Utilizing your VA Benefit at ÃÛÌÒÉçÇø

If you have previously used your VA benefits at other institutions where the tuition and fees were paid upfront and/or the benefit covered the majority of your costs, please note that the process is different at ÃÛÌÒÉçÇø. The example below explains how certification works at ÃÛÌÒÉçÇø and provides guidance for planning your financial needs.

Traditional schools have set start and end dates (e.g., August–December for Fall and January–May for Spring). Because there are fewer start and end dates, tuition and fees are disbursed in one lump sum (e.g., Ch 33) at the beginning of the academic year. ÃÛÌÒÉçÇø operates on a block schedule, which means there are multiple start and end dates. Therefore, the tuition and fees must be broken down by credit hour and disbursed two weeks before each block. Funds are released only after confirming that the student attended the first day of the block to avoid creating debt. Essentially, ÃÛÌÒÉçÇø’s per-credit-hour cost is higher than at traditional schools, so VA education benefits may be exhausted before the end of the academic year. Even if you are approved for Chapter 33 at 100%, VA benefits will not cover all costs. Students should plan for additional financial resources.

Students who wish to utilize their VA benefit should provide the Student Services Office with:

• Declaration of Intent to Apply for VA Benefits Form (provided by the Student Services Office)
• Certificate of Eligibility or a copy of the page from their eBenefits account showing the chapter they will be using
• Military Transcript (veterans only). If submitted to your academic program, request they forward a copy to the Student Services Office.

It is the student’s responsibility to understand how the benefit apply to their costs. The Bursar and Financial Aid Offices will be notified once you make initial contact with the Student Services Office.

ÃÛÌÒÉçÇø does not participate in the Yellow Ribbon program.

The VA academic year runs August 1 through July 31. Once benefits are exhausted for the year, eligibility resumes on August 1 of the following year. Other financial aid options will need to cover remaining costs. New students should expect to cover initial costs of student health insurance unless they waive the student health insurance plan through the . Students must submit a waiver each academic year by the published deadlines, even if they previously had an approved waiver on file.

Scholarship Information

If you apply for a scholarship that must be used for tuition and fees only, this will affect your VA benefits. VA pays last, meaning: If the scholarship covers 100% of tuition and fees, VA will only cover costs not included in the scholarship (e.g., books or supplies).

To avoid VA debt, notify the Certifying Official and Bursar as soon as possible if you apply for a scholarship. Scholarships are managed by the Financial Aid Office, not the School Certifying Officials. Direct questions to your Financial Aid Advisor or the Bursar’s Office.
